VII Joan Boada and Mercè Rovira Award goes to Bengt Winblad
For seven editions, the Barcelona-Pittsburgh Biennial Conference has awarded the Joan Boada and Mercè Rovira Award to an outstanding research personality in the field of dementias with the aim of recognizing the career and contribution of its bearer to science and knowledge of Alzheimer's or other related diseases.
Bengt Winblad, Professor of Neurogeriatrics at the Department of Neurobiology, Care Sciences and Society at the Karolinska Institute, has been distinguished with the VII Joan Boada & Mercè Rovira Award due to his significant contribution to research on the epidemiology, genetics and treatment of dementia, especially Alzheimer's disease.
Professor Winblad is one of the world leaders in the field of research on dementia and neurodegenerative diseases. In 2009, he was named the world's most prolific Alzheimer's researcher by the prestigious scientific journal Journal of Alzheimer's Disease.
Until 2018, he held the role of head of Neurogeriatrics at the prestigious Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, Sweden. Currently, he leads his own research group, focusing on medicines development.
Throughout his career, Dr. Winblad has made major contributions to the advancement of knowledge of Alzheimer's disease and related disorders. He is a member of the Advisory Committee of the Medical Research Council. From 2001 to 2019, he chaired the European Alzheimer's Disease Consortium (EADC), which currently consists of 71 clinical research centers across Europe. Since 2009, he has been a member of the Senate of the German national network on neurodegenerative disorders, DZNE. He was Principal Investigator of the first EU Joint Program project, BIOMARKAPD, under the objective to standardize sampling and biomarker measurement in Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases.
His dedication and excellence in research have been recognized with numerous awards, including the European Grand Prize for Research in 2019, awarded by the Foundation for Alzheimer's Disease Research in France.
Dr. Winblad continues to leave an indelible mark on medical research and the search for solutions to neurodegenerative diseases.
