Blog | Alzheimer’s and the rose from the Little Price

The Little Prince said:

- "It is the time you have wasted for your rose that makes your rose so important."

- "It is the time I have wasted for my rose" - said the Little Prince, so that he would be sure to remember.

- "Men have forgotten this truth," said the fox. "But you must not forget it. You become responsible, forever, for what you have tamed. You are responsible for your rose..."

- "I am responsible for my rose," the Little Prince repeated, so that he would be sure to remember.

When we are children and adolescents and we have yet to create all our memories and our history, we forget that not everyone will be able to keep their memories forever. Our personal history is stored in the heart of our brain, strong and fragile at the same time. If we are history and present, feelings and actions, we do not stop being when we die, but when we forget.

Humanity with science has performed the miracle of lengthening our lives, improving health and its conditioning factors, and we like to believe that we have a better world. We can enjoy the wisdom of older people much longer, their essential experience to build the world of tomorrow.

But we have opened the door to many conditions that are daughters, precisely, of this well-being. Neurodegenerative diseases and their consequences did not concern us 150 years ago, when we were afraid of infections.

Humanity, tireless despite everything and that does have a memory, a shared knowledge, has long since put science to work to understand these diseases in depth and give them an answer.

Like the Little Prince and his rose, we are responsible for preserving the collective memory, which is the sum of the legacy of all those who have gone before us. Because if we have managed to put an end to many diseases, we can hope to find the antidote to the forgotten microbe, just as we have found a remedy for the cancer microbe and a solution for the microbes of many pandemics.

Like the Little Prince and his rose, now we must take care of our roses, those that have been born to enjoy the miracle of a longer life. Here are the roses and we are here to take care of them so that they do not lose the freshness, colour and meaning of their life. For them and for those of us who enjoy their presence. The rose of the relationship with the elderly, guardians of their memories and their lives, for their knowledge and experience. Because they are our history, reason for being and from where the young people who come after build their future.

We cannot afford to lose this baggage. And that is why it is essential to always remember that there is a lot of work to be done. We have found a remedy for diseases that seemed impossible to cure, and we have managed to comfort and improve the lives of many people. Putting effort, knowledge and resources, we will help our roses to continue to maintain freshness, thorns and give us their beauty and colour.

Ace Alzheimer Center Barcelona is the Little Prince of the planet of the rose, who with the glass bell protects people with Alzheimer's and studies the best way and what is the best fertilizer so that the rose can proudly enjoy its perfect beauty. To continue working so that Alzheimer's becomes history, we need enthusiasm and the desire to change things, resources, hope and everyone's support.
