RAMCIP - Robotic Assistant for MCI Patients at Home
European Comission (H2020-PHC-2014/2015) & Fundació ACE
The RAMCIP study has developed the first home care robot for older people with mild cognitive impairment (MCI)
The European project Robotic Assistant for MCI Patients at home (RAMCIP) was launched to develop, within three years, the first home care robot for older people with mild cognitive impairment (MCI). Funded by the European Commission, within the framework of the Horizon 2020 program, the aim of the device is to maintain the independence, autonomy and quality of life of users for as long as possible.
Coordinated by the Institute of Information Technology - Hellas Research and Technology Center (ITI-CERTH) in Greece, the RAMCIP project envisages the creation of robot-assisted home environments that provide safe support in significant aspects of the user's daily life, such as cooking, eating, dressing or performing some household tasks. As a result, dehydration and malnutrition are prevented, and mortality and the number of hospitalizations, among others, are reduced.
In addition, the project foresees that the robot will help the user to maintain a positive attitude and to work on their cognitive and physical skills, as part of their welfare work, incorporating exercise into their daily behaviour.
Fundació ACE has been in charge of carrying out the pilot tests of the RAMCIP robot in the homes of patients with mild cognitive impairment and mild dementia in Barcelona. It has also selected users based on strict inclusion criteria that have to do with both the person and the phase of the disease in which they are, as well as with their physical, family and social environment.
